Shopify vs Custom E-Commerce: What's Right for Your Egyptian Brand?
When Egyptian brands come to us for an e-commerce store, one of the first questions we ask is: Shopify or custom? There's no universal right answer — but there is a right answer for your specific situation. Here's how to think about it.
What Shopify Does Well
Shopify is not a compromise. It's a genuinely powerful platform that handles payments, inventory, shipping, taxes, and more out of the box. For most Egyptian e-commerce businesses, Shopify can do everything they need — and it does it reliably.
Where Shopify truly shines:
- Speed to market: A well-built Shopify store can go live in 2–4 weeks.
- Payment gateways: Paymob, Stripe, and other local options integrate cleanly.
- App ecosystem: Email marketing, loyalty programmes, reviews, upsells — often available as plug-ins.
- Reasonable cost: Monthly subscription replaces much of the infrastructure overhead.
When Shopify Becomes a Constraint
Shopify's checkout is locked. You can customise it at higher tiers, but you cannot completely own it. If your business model requires a multi-step, highly customised purchase flow — subscription boxes, custom configuration, B2B ordering portals — Shopify starts fighting you.
Other cases where Shopify limits you:
- Complex product bundling or configuration
- Deep integration with a proprietary ERP or warehouse system
- A genuinely unique purchase flow that no Shopify app can replicate
- Scale that makes Shopify's transaction fees economically painful
What Custom E-Commerce Gives You
A custom-built store gives you complete ownership of every layer — the database, the checkout, the front end, the business logic. There are no transaction fees. There are no app conflicts. You can build exactly what your customers and your operation needs.
The trade-off: it costs more upfront and requires proper engineering. A poorly built custom store is worse than a well-built Shopify store every time.
Our Honest Recommendation
For most Egyptian brands starting out or scaling to mid-size: use Shopify. Get to market faster, validate your model, and invest in custom development once you know exactly what constraints you've hit.
If you're a large operation with genuinely unique requirements, a multi-channel business, or a SaaS/subscription model: custom is the right investment.
We build both, and we'll tell you honestly which one you need. Get in touch with your brief and we'll recommend the right approach.
